Weekly Recap: [Workshop Replay] Supporting Anxiety in Neurodivergent Kids
+ Local Event: Helping our kids grow outside!
Earlier this week…
If you’re raising or teaching a neurodivergent child, you have likely noticed they seem to experience more intense emotions than their neurotypical peers. As we’ve talked about in previous workshops, autistic, ADHD, and gifted/2e (twice-exceptional) learners often experience a narrower window of tolerance for a variety of reasons.
The anxiety in neurodivergent kids often goes beyond just regular worries of childhood and can manifest as aggressive behavior, arguing, avoidance, and/or sensory meltdowns.
In this workshop you will learn:
How to spot anxiety related to bedtime, school, & social interactions
What behaviors look like defiance but are actually anxiety
How to figure out patters of anxiety and strategies to prevent it
How to explain anxiety to your child so they feel more in control
How to decide when to add support and when to step back to encourage your child’s growth
Join the 2025 Friday Workshops

Project Enlightenment Foundation presents:
Growing Outdoors: Maximizing Social-Emotional Learning in Outdoor Spaces
Join me Thursday, March 20th 6:30-8:00pm at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church in Raleigh for the 2025 Peggy Hibbert Enlightenment Speaker Series event to learn together with my colleague Christine Burkhart.
Learn with Dr. Emily is a proud sponsor of this event!
This presentation will be appropriate for parents, teachers, and anyone involved in the care of young children. Certificates of attendance are available for teachers! (1.5 contact hours).
Participants will grow their confidence in using outdoor spaces to maximize social/emotional learning. Parents and teachers will get a “fresh perspective” on outdoor learning and leave with practical, “ready to implement” ideas to use the very next day!
Meet Dr. Emily…
As a child psychologist, former school psychologist, and parent, I’ve spent the last two decades working with neurodivergent children and teens alongside their families and teachers.
Our kids are complex. What works for one child may or may not work for another. Our families are complex. There is so much information out there, but you are ultimately the decision-makers of the next best step in your child’s journey. I want to help you to feel more capable and experience more joy on this parenting journey.
If you’re ready to learn how to reduce the stress in your home, help others understand your kid, and find more joy, you are in the right place.
Let’s do this together,
~Dr. Emily
