In today’s Advice Thread, we’re sharing all of our travel hacks. Let’s talk about preparing our kids for travel, our favorite travel destinations, and share everything we’ve learned along the way. Remember, it’s not a vacation; it’s a FAMILY FIELD TRIP. This is when you take your routines on the road to expand your child’s experiences and maybe even try a new food. I’ll go first!
PREPARING KIDS FOR TRAVEL: Social stories on the when, where, and who is involved in the trip
FAVORITE TRAVEL HACKS: Saved packing lists, battery packs, screens, HEADPHONES, snacks & schedules in my notes app (For air travel, everyone has a suitcase and a backpack)
FAVORITE DESTINATIONS: South Carolina Beaches, North Carolina Mountains, Sedona Arizona, Royal Caribbean Cruise, New York City, Washington DC
WHAT HAS WORKED: Sticking to the home sleep and meal schedule as best as possible, incorporating my child’s interests, knowing when my child is DONE, reminders for medication (especially if you are in a different time zone)
MUST HAVES: A pool at the hotel, wifi, did I say HEADPHONES?
ALSO HELPFUL: Air BNB versus hotel so everyone has enough space
Ok, YOUR TURN! Ask questions below and share your wins. Let’s have some FUN this summer!
Love these! I travel solo with my 3 year old (we live in Europe). Some things that have worked for us for flights/holidays:
- ALL the snacks! Individually wrapped or in snack pots helps slow things down and is a good activity, also contains the mess.
- Saved packing list and keeping a toiletries bag already packed with duplicates/minis of what we use at home
- Reusable sticker books
- Different toys in ziploc bags to get out during the flight/airport/or in the hotel - mini dinosaurs, Plus-Plus blocks are always big hits
- We pick out a new book at the airport, plus I throw a couple of light paperback stories in our luggage. The Busy Airport book was great when he was younger
